Technology
More actions
A technology is researched in the research panel and usually unlocks an ability or modifier.
Research
Technologies are randomly rolled and the tech tree is non-linear, therefore techs are not predetermined.
Attributes
Base Cost
Base cost is the minimum possible cost, on standard duration. Base cost increases by 25 for every technology that is researched, and also increases by 300 per technology level, starting from 300 (i.e. technologies start from 300)
Repeatable technologies do not have levels, and instead increase by 300 every time they are researched (i.e. 300, 600, 900...).
Weight
Roll weight is the likelihood of rolling a technology. When techs are rolled, all other unlocked tech weights are also considered. For example, a tech with a weight of 50% does not mean it has an absolute 50% chance of appearing, but rather is 5x more likely to appear than a technology that has 10% weight.
Repeatable
Repeatable technologies can be researched more than once, and their modifiers stack additively. For example, researching Repeatable Hull twice gives +20% hull, not +21%. Unless stated otherwise, there is no limit to how many times they can be researched.
Required Government
Unique building technologies can only be rolled by an empire with the matching government type.
Categories
Ships
Ship technologies unlock a new ship type that can be built at a Dock, and increase fleet capacity, which is the number of ships that can fit in a single military fleet.
Buildings
Building technologies unlock a type of building, including all of its levels. A building can only be upgraded to a level that its colony has reached (see Colony).
Colony
A colony's level is the level of its capital building. Colony technologies allow the capital to be upgraded to the next level, which in turn allows the colony's other buildings to be upgraded to that level. Higher level capitals also have a higher siege difficulty.
Starbases
A starbase starts undesignated, and can be designated as a Hub, Dock or Fort once the technology for that type is researched. An empire's capital starbase acts as all three types.
- Hub: Collects resources from star systems within its collection range, which is 1 starlane jump per Hub level.
- Dock: Builds ships. Each Dock level above 1 increases its ship build speed by 50%.
- Fort: Has 3x hull and shields. Allied ships fighting in its star system deal +10% damage per Fort level.
Starbase capacity is the number of starbases that can be designated, starting from 1. Each starbase type technology increases starbase capacity by 1.
Starbase level technologies allow starbases to be upgraded. Each level doubles a starbase's hull and shields and increases the effect of its designation, but also increases its
upkeep and designation cost. Upgrading a starbase fully heals it.
Unique Buildings
Unique building technologies unlock a unique building for a specific government type. Unique buildings take 12 months to build and have a special effect, as well as providing jobs.
Fleet
Fleet technologies unlock new ways for fleets to move around the galaxy.
Ship Builder
Ship builder technologies unlock larger turrets for ship presets in the ship builder.
